MTurk Is Closing. What Now?

Amazon Mechanical Turk shuts down September 30, 2026. Here's why migrating your document work to another crowd platform is the wrong move, and what to do instead.

Amazon Mechanical Turk shutting down, document work moving to AI extraction

Amazon Mechanical Turk closes permanently on September 30, 2026. After that, the login just doesn't work.

That caps a 21-year run. If your team used it, or something like it, for document data entry, validation, or extraction, the obvious move is to find another crowd platform and migrate the work over.

Don't.

You'll see plenty of pitches this month calling themselves "the MTurk replacement." Read the fine print. Most of them are the exact same trade Amazon ran for two decades, a pool of anonymous workers doing piecework, just with a nicer dashboard and an account manager attached. That's not a fix. That's the same problem with better branding.

Why this isn't a platform problem

Crowdsourced task platforms ran on one trade: cheap, anonymous, per-task human labor for work computers couldn't do reliably. That trade made sense in 2005. It doesn't anymore.

Not because the work disappeared. Because the two things crowd platforms were actually good at, low cost and infinite scale, stopped being the hard part. The hard part was always getting a reliable, structured answer out of a document without paying someone to read it line by line. That part is what changed.

Amazon isn't just closing MTurk, either. SageMaker Ground Truth and Amazon Augmented AI shut down the same day. That's not one product getting retired. That's an exit from human-data infrastructure, managed review layer included.

If you're migrating off a crowd platform this month, this is also the moment to skip the next one and automate the task itself.

Two workflows, side by side

Crowd platform:

Document -> Human -> Data -> Review -> Export

Every document goes to a person first. Someone reads it, types what they see, and someone else checks the work before it's usable. The speed and cost of the whole pipeline is bounded by how fast anonymous workers, who don't know your business or your document formats, can type. Double-checking helps but doesn't solve it. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association found even double-keyed manual entry still runs around 2% error, and single-keyed entry closer to double that.

Foxello:

Document -> AI extraction -> Confidence check -> Export

Every document goes through extraction first. Fields the system is confident about export immediately, no person involved. Only the fields it's genuinely unsure about get flagged, and those go to someone on your own team who actually knows the business, reviewing one field, not retyping a whole document from scratch.

Who's doing the thinking, and where

That's the real difference. Not speed. A crowd worker paid a few cents a task has no reason to catch that something looks wrong, they don't know your vendors or your formats, and they're not paid to notice. Someone on your team reviewing a flagged field does, because they know what a wrong number costs.

Who this isn't for

If MTurk was your platform for something other than documents, content moderation, sentiment labeling, general surveys, one-off AI training annotation, this isn't the fix. Foxello reads documents. It doesn't replace a labeling workforce for image tagging or opinion work. If document data entry, validation, or extraction was the job, keep reading.

Before you migrate anything

Don't move the process as-is to a new vendor. Spend twenty minutes first:

  • List what you're actually asking workers to do: read a field, or make a judgment call
  • Separate the two. Structured fields (dates, totals, vendor names) are extraction. Judgment calls (is this photo appropriate, does this response make sense) still need a person, no platform changes that
  • For the structured half, that's the part worth automating before you sign a new contract with anyone

Most document-heavy MTurk use looks like the first bucket once you actually break it down.

What this looks like for you

You don't need a new task platform, a new worker pool, or a place to post Human Intelligence Tasks. You need the document to land somewhere that already understands what's in it, with a person involved only where it genuinely matters.

Set up a workflow, upload your documents, and see what clears with high confidence versus what needs a second look. Most of it won't need a person at all.
